Guardian Student Media Awards shortlist announced

By Alexandra Zeevalkink

The Guardian today announced the shortlist for the Guardian Student Media Awards which features students who have produced ‘outstanding journalism’ during their time at university.

The categories for the awards include publication of the year, reporter of the year, writer of the year, photographer of the year, digital journalist of the year and broadcast journalist of the year.

A new category that has been included for digital journalist of the year.

Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger said:

‘The students entering this year’s Guardian Student Media Awards are facing one of the most challenging journalistic environments in the history of the awards so far. Seismic changes in technology are creating new ways of connecting and informing communities, which inspire and terrify in equal measure.

“The students that succeed will be those who understand the value of journalism and demonstrate the best of journalistic qualities: courage, campaigning, toughness, compassion, humour, irreverence; a serious engagement with serious things; a sense of fairness; an eye for injustice; a passion for explaining; knowing how to achieve impact, and of course a connection with readers.”

Past winners of the Guardian Student Media Awards have included high profile writers such as Andrew Rawnsley, Jonathan Freedland and Emily Barr.

The panel that selected the shortlist included amongst others: Alan Rusbridger; Jon Snow, presenter at Channel 4 News; Paul Kenyon, investigative journalist for Panorama and Krissi Murison, editor at NME.

The winners of the awards will be announced on Wednesday 24 November at an awards ceremony held in London.
